Psychology

Wesker is one of the few characters I've had not only a good time writing into fan fictions, but also one that I've had a good time analyzing the psychology of. This page would be for the more experienced fans, veterans of the series who already know what happens in the games, and it's my attempt to answer 'why' and 'how' in certain situations.

Not to mention I get tired of hearing certain things like "Wesker's a passionate killer". But anyway...

It's hard to start off because after the mansion incident, he's no longer human, so it's a new breed of sociopath we're dealing with here, but I'll start there. Wesker IS a sociopath, I think everyone can agree on that stipulation. So here's a list of defining charactistics of a sociopath, with the bold definitions being those that apply to Wesker in general.

    1. Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest.
    2. Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure.
    3. Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead.
    4. Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults.
    5. Reckless disregard for safety of self or others.
    6. Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain steady work or honor financial obligations.
    7. Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another.

1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 are all dead ringers for our dear Wesker. But the man DOES plan ahead and he isn't irresponsible at all. Still though, 5 out of 7 definitions prove that he is definitely sociopathic.

One suggests that Wesker doesn't conform himself to the rules set by society, and instead, lives in his own world with his own set of rules, which he may break or go back on at any time without worrying about the repercussions to himself. The best evidence of this is in Code Veronica with his attacks against Claire Redfield. He constantly changes his plans toward using her to suit another purpose he has in mind.

If anyone doesn't understand number two, they should be taken out and lobotomized. Wesker's entire stint as the Captain of the S.T.A.R.S. team was a lie, not to mention he has, of course, lied on several other occasions.

Four is somewhat questionable. Wesker is fairly reserved, but his irritableness is shown on several different occasions, such as smacking Jill when she becomes too smartmouthed, or, at the mention of Chris Redfield, becoming angry, resulting in aggressiveness toward his sister. This also goes hand in hand with five. Throughout the series, it's pretty obvious that Wesker has no trouble with using aggressiveness to get what he wants done, despite the fact that he doesn't become enragingly angry most of the time.

Seven is also very apparent. In his aggressive dealings with others, he shows that he has no remorse or conscious over what he does to another person that may be standing in his way.

TAKE IT BACK!!!

Common Misconceptions

These things just get under my skin so much. So I wanted to discuss them here to get them off of my chest.

First and foremost, the common misconception that Wesker is a passionate killer who will kill without any reason at all, or for the slightest transgression. First of all, Wesker doesn't kill for pleasure. He gets no rise out of it, nor does he kill for the slightest transgression, otherwise everyone who's crossed him would be dead by now. When he does kill someone, it's been because he has no remorse over the persons death or feelings, and/or because they were standing in his way and had to die for him to gain something personally.

The second misconception I really hate is that he's obsessed with killing Chris or he's incessantly seeking him out. He's not. Play Code Veronica again, and watch the scene with Wesker and Alexia and Chris in the mansion. Notice something? Wesker allowed Alexia to think that Chris was working for him with the goal of one of them dying. Wesker wouldn't have left Chris there for Alexia to kill if he was so hell bent on killing Chris himself. He saw an avenue for killing two birds with one stone and he took it. Either Chris killed Alexia and then he could take care of Chris, or Alexia killed him, and Wesker could just take care of retrieving the virus he was after from her.

It's true, Wesker may be happy if he should ever kill Chris, but it's not because he takes pleasure in killing people. The happiness is because Chris is a thorn in his side, and, well, anyone would be happy to get a thorn out of their sides...

Relationships

Yeah, you know I had to do it...¬.¬ But yes, relationships. I've heard all kinds of tales about Wesker, and the first I want to tackle is his sexual preference, as in whether or not he's a homosexual. Sorry, but I don't see that. Yes of course, the man is a snazzy dresser, but honestly, how many men do you know who like to look good? This is nothing more than ego on Wesker's part, and perhaps materialism. There is nothing else that suggests that his character is homosexual. Period. Most of the gay's I know don't like to wear all black all the time, they like a little color.

As for how Wesker views women, I don't think he has any type of sexist views at all, as in women are weaker than men, but that's never been an issue that's been tackled, and honestly, he probably views them as equals considering he does his fair share of hitting and beating up on them. (Poor Claire ;_;)

As for a relationship, being the confident sociopath he is, it's probably not all that hard for him at all to actually start a relationship saying he'd want to. But it would more than likely be a rather difficult chore for him to keep it. And there's Wesker's downfall when it comes to relationships. His practicality. Being a practical person myself, sometimes overly so, I know what it's like to view something as a struggle with little to no meaningful rewards. And what rewards would Wesker see in having another person around who loves him? The benefits would be very little, as he would probably mistrust them often, and perhaps the only thing he would gain from it would be the sex. So no, that's not exactly an uber super reward that Wesker would be after. And the woman would probably have to prove herself time and time again that she is, in fact, trustworthy.

This is the reason, I believe, that Wesker isn't married, unlike his colleague William Birkin, because it's not practical for him to be. It would be a nuisance to Wesker, nothing more, because the only person he loves is himself.

On that note, I also believe it is VERY possible for him to get married. The reason for this is that there's always a right situation that can possibly happen, and you never say never of course. But for it to happen, the woman would have to be skilled in a way that would benefit him and his cause, perhaps be a bit of eye candy to him (it wouldn't hurt anyway), and she would have to prove somehow, unconsciously, that she wouldn't be an unwelcome burden to him. So I think that Wesker is probably suited best for one night stands, or short, meaningless flings.
